Free class series: Exercise Foundations for Healthy Aging
• May 7th: Balance Training
Test your balance skills in a safe environment to determine your fall risk
Compare your balance to standard values for healthy individuals your age
Learn safe and effective exercises to work on your balance at home
Learn how to modify your home and habits to reduce fall risk
Learn about common causes of dizziness and the body’s three balance systems
Class requirements: Targeted towards individuals who can stand and walk independently with or without assistive device for at least 5 minutes.
• May 14th: “Cardio” Training
Learn about the benefits of cardiovascular fitness and healthy aging
Learn how to monitor your heart rate, oxygen level, and effort level for safe exercise
Learn how to target your optimal heart rate zone for appropriate intensity and improvements in
Learn tips and tricks to fight off boredom with cardio exercise
Become comfortable using and adjusting common “cardio” equipment such as treadmills, bikes,
elliptical, stair master, etc.
Class requirements: This class is targeted towards individuals without acute or untreated medical conditions who can stationary bike or walk at least 5 minutes without assistance. By attending this class you acknowledge that it is not advised to start an exercise program without physician approval.
• May 21st: Strength Training
Learn about common strength training equipment and techniques
Learn and practice proper form and the do’s and don’ts of using weight machines
Learn how safe strength training can slow the effects of aging on the body
Learn how to accurately determine sets and repetitions for optimal strength gains
Meet personal trainers that can help you meet your goals
Class requirements: This class is targeted towards healthy individuals without acute or untreated orthopedic or medical issues. Participants must be able to get on and off seated equipment without assistance. By attending this class you acknowledge that it is not advised to start an exercise program without physician approval.
